 |  After first rocketing to fame as the frontman for grunge-era favorites    |
 |  Stone Temple Pilots, singer Scott Weiland later mounted a solo career.    |
 |  Born October 27, 1967, in Santa Cruz, CA, he was raised outside of        |
 |  Cleveland, but moved back to the West Coast at the age of 15, immersing   |
 |  himself in the thriving Orange County punk scene. In 1987 Weiland         |
 |  founded the band Mighty Joe Young with guitarist Robert DeLeo; later      |
 |  rechristened Stone Temple Pilots, the group became one of the biggest     |
 |  acts of the mid-'90s, following the lead of artists like Nirvana and      |
 |  Pearl Jam to top the charts with their angst-ridden hard rock sound.      |
 |  However, their success did not come without a price, and following the    |
 |  group's second LP, 1994's Purple, it was revealed that Weiland had        |
 |  become a heroin addict. After a stay in rehab, he returned to Stone       |
 |  Temple Pilots to record their third record, 1996's Tiny Music...Songs     |
 |  from the Vatican Giftshop. However, after Weiland suffered a relapse in   |
 |  his ongoing battle with drugs, the group was forced to cancel their       |
 |  upcoming tour; when the other three members subsequently recorded an      |
 |  album with a different singer under the name Talk Show, STP's continued   |
 |  existence appeared shaky at best, and Weiland went solo to record 1998's  |
 |  12 Bar Blues.                                                             |

 |  Problems stemming from drug abuse continued to dog Weiland during the     |
 |  late '90s as his album faltered commercially and a subsequent arrest for  |
 |  buying heroin ultimately landed the troubled singer in jail.              |
 |  Nonetheless, STP reconvened for the 1999 album No. 4 featuring the hit    |
 |  single "Sour Girl" — purportedly inspired by the breakup of Weiland's     |
 |  marriage. Despite the success of the album, STP officially parted ways    |
 |  around 2001 surrounding speculation that a fight between Weiland and      |
 |  DeLeo was to blame. Post his time with STP, Weiland still seemed unable   |
 |  to avoid controversy as a car crash on his birthday in 2003 landed him    |
 |  in rehab. Around this time, former Guns N' Roses members guitarist        |
 |  Slash, bassist Duff McKagan, and drummer Matt Sorum auditioned Weiland    |
 |  for their new band. The trio took to Weiland immediately, and the newly   |
 |  christened hard rock ensemble Velvet Revolver released their debut        |
 |  album, Contraband, in 2004. The album sold well and the band even picked  |
 |  up a Grammy for Best Rock Song for the single "Slither" in 2005. Weiland  |
 |  was also onboard for Velvet Revolver's 2007 sophomore effort, Libertad.   |

Early indication is that Danielia Cotton is a fiery blues-rock artist
with a chip on her shoulder. She doesn't like comparisons, although as
of the May 2006 release of her debut disc she was earning them with such
titans as Tina Turner, Janis Joplin, and the Rolling Stones. And she
doesn't mind letting the world know that the circumstances of her youth
were less than ideal: Cotton, according to a mounting pile of press
materials, grew up fatherless in rural Hopewell, NJ, as one of only
seven black [CENSORED]ren at the local high school ?thus the title of her
CD, Small White Town.
Inspiration for a career in music came from her mother, a little-known
jazz singer, and two aunts. The three women sang as a trio at church,
igniting a passion for big belting in Cotton. Outside of church, though,
her musical tastes leaned in an unlikely direction. AC/DC, Judas Priest,
Led Zeppelin, and Todd Rundgren ?not hip-hop or R&B ?formed the
soundtrack to Cotton's discomfited youth, and shreds of the hard rock
bands' fury and of Rundgren's literate sensitivity shade her songs.
Early adulthood found Cotton and her electric guitar abandoning Hopewell
for Manhattan. There she played the rock club circuit, eventually
befriending Kevin Salem of the band Chocolate Genius. Salem produced
Small White Town, a promising disc full of hurt and hope that, as she
finds her footing within the indie scene, should beget a string of

 re-underlines AEROSMITH's position as rock's quintessential live band.
 Recorded in January 2002 at during an intimate club date at The Joint in
 the Las Vegas Hard Rock Hotel, it contains 11 tracks that are by turns

    Viking Skull was formed in 2003 by vocalist Roddy Stone, guitarists Frank
    Regan and Darren Smith, bassist Waldie and drummer Gordon Morrison. They drew
    deeply from Black Sabbath for inspiration then added a little AC/DC, WASP,
    Motorhead, The Who, Kiss and Thin Lizzy for good measure. This, mixed with
    whiskey drenched vocals; they forged an uncompromising brand of classic metal
    of their own. They started life gigging/rehearsing at local jam nights in
    Corby, Kettering and Rothwell, simply because it was free and each song
    played earned you a free pint. Soon these jam nights started to get packed
    out and people began asking for CDs, so they recorded and mixed their six
    track demo, Chapter One, for £500 in just two days and released it in 2004
    under the Grand Union Label.
    Chapter One received rave reviews here in the UK, one of them being the only
    band still to this date to have scored an impressive 11/10 in a Metal Hammer
    album review. This quickly earned them support slots on tours with Dio, Him,
    Sum 41, Wednesday 13, Alice Cooper, Brides of Destruction and a slot at
    Download 2004. However due to a heavy touring schedule and with no label
    support, cracks started to appear in the unit. The departure of Frank midway
    through a Wednesday 13 tour meant Roddy had to quickly switch to both guitar
    and vocals.
    The vibe and energy in Skull remained untouched and people wanted more, so in
    November 2005, they released the full-length album Born in Hell, but this
    time the good reviews stretched all over the globe. After more heavy touring
    with cKy, Clutch, Hayseed Dixie, Europe another slot at Download 2006 and
    many own headline tours, it all came to a head one night in Köln on the
    European cKy tour in Aug 2006. The mixture of Jess Margera supplying them
    with absinthe and a lack of sleep (3 weeks sleeping in a transit van with no
    cash), the band nearly killed each other…. Viking Skull was no more.
    Gordon continued with his other band Raging Speedhorn, Darren gave up bands
    for good to get a proper job and learn to play the banjo, Waldie just
    listened to Whitesnake and Roddy never left his flat, living on a diet of
    beans on toast and continued to write songs.
    A few months passed and once Jess Margera heard the news of the split, he
    called up Roddy to find out what happened and was gutted. Jess then offered
    his services on drums to keep the band going. Roddy managed to get Waldie
    back on board, got an old friend Jules Cooper to lend a hand in playing some
    lead guitar and they travelled to Philadelphia to recorded their 3rd album
    Chapter Two. This album also had guest appearances from Reverend Jim of
    Fireball Ministry, the Brandywine Eel of Gnarkill, Unkle Matt and the
    Shitbirdz and Chad I Ginsburg of cKy. It was released in 2007 on Filthy Note
    Digital with a limited CD release in the USA. They also shot the video for
    Blackened Sunrise, directed by long time supporter of the band, Bam Margera
    Viking Skull are at their very best right now, the song writing has matured
    and the legendary live shows just keep on getting better and better.

      Johnny Philippon and Jesse Wainwright have gone through a few
      band names and group members since first hooking up in 1999.
      But now — eight years, a 2004 CFOX-FM Seeds contest victory,
      one album and a 2005 Canadian Independent Music Award
      favourite new group nomination later — the new and improved
      State Of Shock has definitely got it right.
 
      The Vancouver quintet's new Cordova Bay Records release,
      "Life, Love & Lies", sees it ready to take the next step and
      join similar west coast acts Nickelback, Theory Of A Deadman
      and Default as shining stars on the Canadian and international
      rock scenes.
 
      "We definitely went from an immature heavy rock band to
      finding our comfort zone with the more pop-rock melodic music
      that we have today on this record," says Philippon.
 
      State Of Shock has honed its commercial sound as its members
      have spent more time together, spending weeks at a time in a
      van crossing back and forth across Canada and allowing
      everyone to have input into the songwriting process so that
      there are no ego problems to deal with. All five musicians
      have a stake in making the band as successful as possible, and
      they have people behind them who believe as much in Life, Love
      & Lies as they do.
 
      "Our parents' bank accounts are on it," says Philippon. We've
      begged, borrowed and pleaded with everybody we know. It's not
      cheap to make a record with the professionals we're using and
      the studios we went in."
 
      Those professionals include producer Jeff Dawson (Daniel
      Powter, Tal Bachman), who recorded the album in late 2006 at
      Vancouver's Mushroom and Hipposonic Studios, and hard rock
      specialist Mike Fraser, who mixed the record at the city's
      Warehouse Studios and added State Of Shock to a list of
      credits that already included AC/DC, Aerosmith, Motley Crue,
      Metallica and Rush.
 
      "Working with Jeff was great because he has a bit of a
      different background that was a little more pop-oriented, and
      we were one of the first bands that was a little heavier that
      he had worked with," says Wainwright. "So he brought a bit of
      a different element in and things that we normally wouldn't
      have thought of as far as little production things on the
      record."
 
      The shiny yet still powerful music on "Life, Love & Lies"
      caught the attention of Cordova Bay, the Frontside Promotions
      marketing and promotion firm and The Agency Group's Ralph
      James, who landed State Of Shock a coveted opening spot on
      Nickelback's Canadian tour that launches nine days after the
      album's June 19 release.
 
      "Once we do the full cross-Canada tour, it will start opening
      a lot of doors," says Wainwright of the opportunity to show
      thousands of rock fans the energy and skillful musicianship
      that his band possesses.
 
      "The more successful we become, the more accepting our peers
      are," adds Philippon. "That's what this business is all about
      for us."
 
      That success has initially come through the warm reception
      Canadian radio stations have given lead single Money Honey,
      which has shot up the rock chart and is set to cross over to
      Hot AC and CHR and become a multi-format smash.

 Black Ice is the upcoming fifteenth studio album by
 Australian hard rock band AC/DC, set to be released on
 October 18, 2008 for Australia and October 20 for the
 rest of the world. It will be their first album in eight
 years, since the release of Stiff Upper Lip in 2000, the
 longest gap between AC/DC's studio albums to date. The
 album was produced by Brendan O'Brien and recorded and
 mixed by Mike Fraser at The Warehouse Studio in
 Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.
 
 In a 2004 interview, Brian Johnson revealed that for the
 first time since the 1988 album Blow Up Your Video, he
 would be handling lyrics. He also said that Angus Young
 has written harder riffs than those on Stiff Upper Lip.
 
 As of January 2006, AC/DC were working on the album, and
 according to Malcolm Young at that time, "The band are
 currently writing and recording material for the eagerly
 anticipated next album, but no release date has been
 set."
 
 In April 2008, AC/DC's official website confirmed the
 release of the new album with producer Brendan O'Brien
 and audio engineer Mike Fraser, but did not confirm a
 release date.
 
 In June 2008, Reuters reported that the album would be
 distributed solely by Wal-Mart stores in the United
 States, and that HMV stores in Canada were advertising
 the album with an October release date.
 
 On August 15, AC/DC recorded the video to accompany the
 first single from the album, "Rock 'n Roll Train", in
 London. Three days later, an announcement was made on the
 band's official website, stating that Black Ice would be
 released on October 20, 2008.
 
 "Rock n' Roll Train" was released on August 28. The video
 of "Rock n' Roll Train" appeared on the band's website on
 September 19. That day also saw the release of the
 album's second single, "War Machine", and the release of
 a brief appraisal of the album by Rolling Stone magazine,
 citing that "Brian wails about skies on fire, blood in
 his eyes, storms raging, lightning flashes, hard rain and
 pretty women...Angus Young shreds throughout...Malcom
 Young, Cliff Williams and Phil Rudd — are solid as a
 rock." as well as making a surprise statement that Angus
 Young uses a slide in the song "Stormy May Day". The
 magazine also named several tracks before the official
 release of the track listing.
 
 Several days after the original version of the album was
 made available for pre-order, the band's website store
 listed two variations of cover artwork available for the
 CD in addition to the original red logo. These were a
 yellow logo and a silver logo. All three versions feature
 the exact same music and content with a black background.
 However, the gray designs behind the band's logo are
 different on each of the two different covers. There is
 also a hardcover Deluxe Edition (blue logo) available
 which will contain a 30-page booklet with exclusive new
 illustrations, studio and live photographs of AC/DC.

 Lucinda Williams has always been adept at painting
 landscapes of the soul, illuminating the spirit's shadowy
 nooks and shimmering crannies -- but she's never captured
 the sun breaking through the clouds as purely as on her
 new Lost Highway release, Little Honey. "I'm in a
 different phase of my life, so there are more happy
 moments on this album," the singer-songwriter says of her
 ninth studio set. " 'Darkly introspective,' is one phrase
 people have used to describe a lot of my songs. There are
 moody songs, but I'm looking outside myself a little bit
 more. These aren't 'boy meets girl, boy leaves girl, girl
 gets bummed out' songs -- there's a lot more than that
 going on."
 
 
 Williams wastes no time signaling that mood change,
 leading into Little Honey's opener, "Real Love" with a
 false start riff that's the six-string equivalent of a
 friendly wink – then sidling into the tune's hard-rocking
 vibe with a sensual slink that underscores the passion of
 finding exactly what that title indicates. The bluesy
 physicality of that tune is echoed in several of Little
 Honey's tracks, from the charmingly chugging "Honeybee"
 to the gorgeous melodies of "If Wishes Were Horses".
 
 "I'm stepping out and writing about things other than
 unrequited love. But because that's not part of my
 experience anymore," she explains, "doesn't mean I'm
 going to stop being a songwriter. There are plenty of
 other important things to write about -- the state of the
 world, for one thing -- I don't buy into the myth that
 because you get to a certain level of contentment, you
 have to throw in the towel."
 
 While Little Honey certainly has plenty to move the hips,
 Williams doesn't neglect her uncanny ability to do the
 same to the heart. The sparse delta delivery she affords
 "Heaven Blues" -- a keening consideration of what might
 await on the other side – hits home thanks to its
 arresting blend of hope and vexation, while the epic
 "Rarity" rides soft waves of brass (instrumentation never
 before heard on one of her discs).
 
 "The one thing the songs have in common is directness,"
 she says. "The beauty of country and blues is their
 simplicity, it's about getting things across in a really
 direct way. I've spent a while stretching out and going
 in different directions, which is my nature. But I feel
 that I can always embrace that original simplicity again
 -- that's why I went back to record 'Circles and Xs,'
 which I actually wrote back in 1985."
 
 Over the course of a recording career that's now in its
 fourth decade, the Louisiana-born singer has navigated
 terrain as varied as the dust-bowl starkness of her 1978
 debut Ramblin' (recorded on the fly with a mere 250
 dollar budget behind her) and the stately elegance of
 last year's West (which Vanity Fair called "the record of
 a lifetime"). Between those signposts, Lucinda Williams
 established a reputation as one of rock's most
 uncompromising and consistently fascinating writers and
 performers, earning kudos from artists as diverse as
 Mary-Chapin Carpenter (who helped win Williams a Grammy
 with her recording of "Passionate Kisses") and Elvis
 Costello (who joins her for a duet on the Little Honey
 mini-drama "Jailhouse Tears").
 
 Williams learned the importance of professional integrity
 around the same time most kids are learning their ABCs,
 thanks in a large part to her award-winning poet father
 Miller Williams -- who invested her with a "culturally
 rich, but economically poor" upbringing where artistic
 expression was of primary importance. Later, she'd hone
 her vision playing hardscrabble clubs around her adopted
 home state of Texas, absorbing the influence of sources
 as varied as Bob Dylan and Lightnin' Hopkins.
 
 "I sometimes say I just started out singing folk songs
 acoustically by default," she recalls. "Even when I was
 playing open mic nights by myself, I'd be sitting up on
 stage with my Martin guitar doing 'Angel' by Jimi Hendrix
 or 'Politician' by Cream alongside Robert Johnson and
 Memphis Minnie songs. It never occurred to me to pick
 just one style."
 
 She's never settled for any sort of pigeonholing,
 entering the '90s with the slow-burning Sweet Old World
 -- a disc that, as much as any release, helped place the
 Americana movement at the forefront of listeners' minds
 -- and cementing her own spot in the cultural lexicon
 with 1998's rough-hewn masterpiece Car Wheels on a Gravel
 Road.
 
 The latter disc earned Williams her first Grammy as a
 performer, but rather than try to capture the same
 lightning in a bottle a second time, she stretched her
 boundaries on 2001's Essence, an album rife with both
 cerebral interludes and soul-stirring stomps. In recent
 times, Williams has broadened her palette even further
 through frequent collaborations with kindred spirits --
 acts as varied as The North Mississippi All-Stars and
 Flogging Molly -- who share her uncommon sense of
 non-revivalist traditionalism.
 
 Little Honey continues that ongoing forward quest, mixing
 country, R & B and blues-rock elements with adventurous
 aplomb. The disc gets an added octane boost from the
 powerful chemistry between the musicians, primarily drawn
 from Williams' latest road band (now collectively known
 as Buick 6) -- includes bassist David Sutton, Eels
 veterans Butch Norton and Chet Lyster as well as longtime
 collaborator Doug Pettibone.
 
 Williams augments that core unit with a passel of
 like-minded folks spanning a huge chunk of the musical
 spectrum, from octogenarian singing legend Charlie Louvin
 to power-pop vets Susannah Hoffs and Matthew Sweet, the
 latter of whom helped arrange the Spector-tinged "Little
 Rock Star" -- applying studio skills that prompted
 Williams to dub him "this generation's Brian Wilson."
 
 "I feel that this is the most eclectic record I've ever
 done, and I've always been known for being eclectic," she
 says. " For this album, I was comfortable just letting
 the songs flow, and not worried about being so serious
 and heavy and having to top myself -- and I think that
 shows."
 
 She needn't have worried for a minute because, with
 Little Honey, Lucinda Williams has indeed topped herself
 again.
