²ÛÛÛÛ²Ý genre of music. There are very few bands out there ²Ý
²ÛÛÛÛ²Ý that could be identified as such and even fewer ²Ý
²ÛÛÛÛ²Ý still that have the knack of expertly combining ²Ý
²ÛÛÛÛ²Ý such diverse styles. While quite a few groups have ²Ý
²ÛÛÛÛ²Ý made a name for themselves by combining traditional ²Ý
²ÛÛÛÛ²Ý Irish instrumentation or tunes with more popular ²Ý
²ÛÛÛÛ²Ý styles, there aren't many who have made a name for ²Ý
²ÛÛÛÛ²Ý themselves as quickly as Flogging Molly. ²Ý
²ÛÛÛÛ²Ý ²Ý
²ÛÛÛÛ²Ý ²Ý
²ÛÛÛÛ²Ý The band, headed up by Dublin born Dave King, ²Ý
²ÛÛÛÛ²Ý offers a melting pot of sounds on its third ²Ý
²ÛÛÛÛ²Ý full-length effort - the aptly titled Within a Mile ²Ý
²ÛÛÛÛ²Ý of Home. King is joined by six other musicians ²Ý
²ÛÛÛÛ²Ý offering up a wide range of instruments including ²Ý
²ÛÛÛÛ²Ý banjo, bodhran, Uillean pipes, fiddle, tin whistle, ²Ý
²ÛÛÛÛ²Ý mandolin, bazouki, and spoons. This lineup might ²Ý
²ÛÛÛÛ²Ý seem like a folk fest waiting to happen, but for ²Ý
²ÛÛÛÛ²Ý Flogging Molly the use of traditional instruments ²Ý
²ÛÛÛÛ²Ý is so much more. Although the group members are ²Ý
²ÛÛÛÛ²Ý known for infusing Irish music into their own brand ²Ý
²ÛÛÛÛ²Ý of punk, this album brings them much closer to ²Ý
²ÛÛÛÛ²Ý King's roots, hence the title Within a Mile of ²Ý
²ÛÛÛÛ²Ý Home. ²Ý

²ÛÛÛÛ²Ý ²Ý
²ÛÛÛÛ²Ý While this release definitely has a strong ²Ý
²ÛÛÛÛ²Ý punk-rock element, the focus is definitely on ²Ý
²ÛÛÛÛ²Ý exploring traditional Irish music. Think jigs, ²Ý
²ÛÛÛÛ²Ý reels, and cry-in-your-beer ballads. The first two ²Ý
²ÛÛÛÛ²Ý tracks, "Screaming at the Wailing Wall" and "Seven ²Ý
²ÛÛÛÛ²Ý Deadly Sins," are rambunctious stompers sure to ²Ý
²ÛÛÛÛ²Ý please the punk fans based on the tempo alone. ²Ý
²ÛÛÛÛ²Ý "Screaming at the Wailing Wall" is an interesting ²Ý
²ÛÛÛÛ²Ý political diatribe centered on George Bush's ²Ý
²ÛÛÛÛ²Ý religious war mongering, while "Seven Deadly Sins" ²Ý
²ÛÛÛÛ²Ý is perhaps the best pirate shanty I've ever heard. ²Ý
²ÛÛÛÛ²Ý If you don't find yourself shouting these two out ²Ý
²ÛÛÛÛ²Ý at top volume then it's time to check your pulse. ²Ý

²ÛÛÛÛ²Ý On "Factory Girls," the band teams up with Lucinda ²Ý
²ÛÛÛÛ²Ý Williams for a down-home folk number that is ²Ý
²ÛÛÛÛ²Ý reminiscent of some of Joe Strummer's later work. ²Ý
²ÛÛÛÛ²Ý Flogging Molly continues this more subdued path on ²Ý
²ÛÛÛÛ²Ý other top-notch tracks like "Whistles the Wind," ²Ý
²ÛÛÛÛ²Ý "Tomorrow Comes a Day too Soon," and "Don't Let Me ²Ý
²ÛÛÛÛ²Ý Die Still Wondering." These are the type of songs ²Ý
²ÛÛÛÛ²Ý that will make you pine for the old country even if ²Ý
²ÛÛÛÛ²Ý you have no Celtic ancestry. ²Ý

²ÛÛÛÛ²Ý stride on the more upbeat tunes. "Tobacco" is a ²Ý

²ÛÛÛÛ²Ý ordinary lyrics tell the story of the Irish being ²Ý
²ÛÛÛÛ²Ý sold as slaves to sugar cane plantations on ²Ý
²ÛÛÛÛ²Ý Barbados. "To Youth (My Sweet Roisin Dubh)" is an ²Ý
²ÛÛÛÛ²Ý anthem for King's beloved Emerald Isle that is ²Ý
²ÛÛÛÛ²Ý easily the best example of the band's talent for ²Ý
²ÛÛÛÛ²Ý expertly blending modern with traditional. ²Ý

²ÛÛÛÛ²Ý Within a Mile of Home is entirely outstanding with ²Ý
²ÛÛÛÛ²Ý no filler or out-of-place songs. Flogging Molly ²Ý
²ÛÛÛÛ²Ý isn't earthshakingly innovative, but the members ²Ý
²ÛÛÛÛ²Ý don't fail to satisfy in the least. Their energy ²Ý
