Û°Û As on-campus performance art provocateurs, Andrew Û°Û
Û°Û and Ben began staging a series of "these Û°Û
Û°Û obnoxious, noisy live electronic shows -- we Û°Û
Û°Û never planned on having it be a recorded project Û°Û
Û°Û -- where we would write these weird techno loops Û°Û
Û°Û and arrangements that we could play with live. Û°Û
Û°Û Most of it was running live off the computer and Û°Û
Û°Û we had a turntable plugged into some guitar Û°Û
Û°Û pedals, a radio, and a tape player. It was all Û°Û
Û°Û electronically generated at that point. We would Û°Û
Û°Û write a new song for each show and our shows Û°Û
Û°Û would be 15 minutes long." Û°Û

Û°Û The One Song/One Show ethos is manifest in the Û°Û
Û°Û tracks of Oracular Spectacular, each song on the Û°Û
Û°Û album shimmers with its own diamond-hard Û°Û
Û°Û compression of elements interconnecting within Û°Û
Û°Û MGMT's "unusual or unconventional pop Û°Û
Û°Û structures." Continually inverting expectations, Û°Û
Û°Û the music of MGMT owes as much to chaos theory as Û°Û
Û°Û it does to fractal geometry. In contrast to the Û°Û
Û°Û group's early live shows, which were mainly Û°Û
Û°Û electronically generated, Oracular Spectacular is Û°Û
Û°Û filled with "more traditional rock instruments: Û°Û
Û°Û electric guitar, bass, drums, keyboards, Û°Û
Û°Û synthesizers all played live." Û°Û

Û°Û Restlessly experimental and consumed with divine Û°Û
Û°Û discontent, the members of MGMT embarked on a Û°Û
Û°Û series of temporary guises. "We went on a tour Û°Û
Û°Û with a drummer once," Andrew confesses, "after Û°Û
Û°Û we'd written these weird California Creedence Û°Û
Û°Û Clearwater-style songs in two weeks. We went Û°Û
Û°Û out, played them, and never did the songs again. Û°Û
Û°Û A lot of people hated it. That used to be the Û°Û
Û°Û goal of our shows. We were still trying to be Û°Û
Û°Û obnoxious and somehow people got into it. Some Û°Û
Û°Û songs we wrote just because we wanted to learn Û°Û
Û°Û how to be really bad within a certain genre and Û°Û
Û°Û then people started liking the song because they Û°Û
Û°Û liked the genre. It was an accident that people Û°Û
Û°Û started liking us." Û°Û

Û°Û Some of those first fans included a group of NYU Û°Û
Û°Û students who formed an indie label, Cantora Û°Û
Û°Û Records, in order to issue the very first MGMT Û°Û
Û°Û commercial release, Time To Pretend (a 6-song EP, Û°Û
Û°Û currently available on iTunes). Two of the songs Û°Û
Û°Û from that EP -- "Time To Pretend" (the MGMT Û°Û
Û°Û "mission statement") and "Kids" ("filled with all Û°Û
Û°Û those college feelings: naivety, idealism, Û°Û
Û°Û nostalgia, happiness, sadness") -- have made it Û°Û
Û°Û on to Oracular Spectacular. Û°Û

Û°Û Following the release of the EP and a couple of Û°Û
Û°Û one-month long tours, MGMT took six months off, Û°Û
Û°Û with Andrew moving to Brooklyn for a post-college Û°Û
Û°Û "existential crisis" and Ben hanging out in Û°Û
Û°Û Connecticut before heading to upstate New York to Û°Û
Û°Û work woodland construction. Û°Û

Û°Û Following their hiatus from MGMT, Ben and Andrew Û°Û
Û°Û reconnoitered in Brooklyn and began recording new Û°Û
Û°Û songs for the sheer fun of it on an "Mbox Û°Û
Û°Û computer set-up." Those humble home sessions -- Û°Û
Û°Û at once Apollonian and Dionysian -- lay the Û°Û
Û°Û groundwork for what would become Oracular Û°Û
