Û In 2003, when "deluxe editions" and "definitive collections" were the Û
Û name of the game in reissues, it was refreshing to see Bob Seger's Û
Û defiantly retro Greatest Hits, Vol. 2 hit the shelves. The title and the Û
Û approach hark back to the days when a hits compilation was followed a Û
Û few years later by a supplement, covering roughly the same territory and Û
Û adding a few new singles. Seger's first Greatest Hits had all the big Û
Û hits, from "Night Moves" to "Old Time Rock & Roll," and while it was Û
Û very effective at that level, many of his big hits were ballads, so by Û
Û extension the hits collection downplayed his rock & roll, which is was Û
Û kind of odd for a singer/songwriter known as a passionate rocker. And Û
Û while there was no arguing with what was on Greatest Hits, it left off Û
Û many songs that illustrated his depth as a songwriter -- and that's not Û
Û even counting that it left his handful of non-LP singles and songs Û
Û unaccounted for or the fact that it ignored his early Cameo/Parkway Û
Û singles, the Bob Seger System, or his first seven albums. Greatest Hits, Û
Û Vol. 2 solves a lot of these problems and is a stronger album than the Û
Û first Greatest Hits because of it. While it's still frustrating that Û
Û Seger ignores his early material (the Cameo/Parkway songs are owned by Û
Û somebody else, but he certainly could dip into the first seven albums, Û
Û at least for "Ramblin' Gamblin' Man"), it's also true that they're of a Û
Û different aesthetic than the anthemic blue-collar rock that he first Û
Û etched out on 1975's Beautiful Loser. That is the music that made him a Û
Û star, and that's the music that fuels this collection, all the way Û
Û through to the lesser-known latter-day sides "Manhattan" and "New Coat Û
Û of Paint," as well as the brand-new cuts "Satisfied" and "Tomorrow," two Û
Û hard-rocking songs that are some of his best music in years. These are Û
Û good, but they are naturally overshadowed by the songs that form the Û
Û heart of this collection: the terrific plea for compassion Û
Û "Understanding," previously only available on the soundtrack to Û
Û Teachers; grinding hard rockers "The Fire Down Below," "Her Strut," and Û
Û "Sunspot Baby"; the delrious Chuck Berry homage "Katmandu," one of his Û
Û funniest and toughest songs; the country-tinged ballads "Shame on the Û
Û Moon" and "Fire Lake"; the aching elegy "Beautiful Loser"; the Û
Û life-afirming "Rock and Roll Never Forgets," one of the best songs about Û
Û aging within rock & roll. In this context, even the too-produced heavily Û
Û synthesized "Shakedown" -- his contribution to 1987's Beverly Hills Cop Û
Û II and his only number one hit, never available on a Seger album until Û
Û now -- turns into a good time. Sure, there are a few songs that probably Û
Û should have made the cut -- most notably "Feel Like a Number" and "Even Û
Û Now" -- but as it stands, Greatest Hits, Vol. 2 is an excellent Û
Û supplement to the first collection and a hell of a lot more fun to Û
Û listen to as well. Û

Static-X, whose platinum-plus Warner Bros. Records debut release
Wisconsin Death Trip (1999) and follow-up Machine (2001) have
firmly cemented the band as hard rock heroes to fans around the
world, have completed work on their third album Shadow Zone. Due
in mid October, this album (enclosed here) teams the band with
producer Josh Abraham (Staind, Limp Bizkit, Unwritten Law).
Shadow Zone and the first single, The Only reveals the next step
in the evolution of Static-X.
Frontman/guitarist/founder Wayne Static says, "I hate it when
bands keep making the same record over and over, so we pushed
ourselves to try new things and experiment in our writing
approach. I feel these are the strongest songs we've ever
written."
The band -- bassist Tony Campos and guitarist Tripp Eisen, along
with Static have refined their line-up with the addition of new
drummer Nick Oshiro. Oshiro replaces drummer Ken Jay who
departed earlier this year (Josh Freese - of A Perfect Circle and
Vandals fame - handled the duties in the studio) -- has also
benefited from additional creative input from Eisen, who joined
Static-X in 2001. "We've worked on these songs for over a year
and we tried a lot of different grooves and sounds, but
collaboration has been the key on this album," says Eisen.
The band recently completed a string of U.S. dates this summer
with Staind. It proved to be a perfect way for fans to get a
sample of what's to come from the new CD. "We were anxious to hit
the road again and play some new songs for everyone- it worked
out perfectly! We were excited to see the extremely positive fan
reaction to the new material, says Static.
