Release Notes:

Wavorly drew its first creative breath as a pop punk assemblage of college
students from Tupelo, Mississippi called Freshmen 15. It wasnÆt long, though,
before vocalist Dave Stovall and bassist Matt Lott caught a grander vision for
what their music and purpose could be. A few years of growth and evolution, some
line-up changes and a couple hundred shows later, Wavorly bursts onto the
national scene with their Flicker Records debut, Conquering The Fear of Flight,
a sprawling modern rock masterpiece that blends elements of alternative, classic
progressive rock, indie-rock and hard rock with highly literate lyrics, a boldly
imaginative use of strings and a sublime sense of melody. In the league of other
genre-stretching acts like Muse, My Chemical Romance, Mae and Switchfoot,
Wavorly rocks with heart and mind intact.

Though the friends all entered school as fans of pop punk bands like Blink 182
and Relient K, their musical influences diversified significantly by the time
they came out the other side. ôI went in more of a rock/hardcore direction at
one point,ö Lott explains. ôThen Dave was getting more into atmospheric pop
artists like Coldplay.ö The guys connected with guitarist Seth Farmer who was a
long-time metalhead and drummer Jaime Hayes, a devotee of ôcrazy progressive
music like Dream Theatre,ö according to Lott. When they realized their road
manager Ryan Coon, a big fan of Muse, could play keyboards he was drafted as
well.

Stovall, the product of a heavily music-oriented family, started as an avid
drummer at the age of five, before adding guitar skills in high school and
chorus and piano in college. He majored in Music Education with an emphasis in
percussion before embracing piano as his main instrument. ôBecause of majoring
in music education,ö Stovall says, ôI took a lot of Music Theory and listened to
a lot of classical music, and it definitely influenced my writing.ö

Lott, who was literally taught bass by Stovall, serves as the primary lyricist
for the band and as a multi-subject substitute teacher when he is home. ôI like
to make the lyrics easy to understand at first glance,ö he admits. ôBut then if
you read through them and listen to the whole song, I like the listener to
figure out; æWait, I think heÆs saying something deeper here.ö

WavorlyÆs uniqueness settles across the listener with the first strains of their
Rob Graves (RED) produced debut. Intricately arranged and immediately accessible
strings and classical piano establish a darkly elegant waltz as the introduction
to the album, before devolving into a pounding wall of guitars and drums.
StovallÆs powerful vocals ride across the top of the churning, but consistently
tuneful brew as he delivers lyrical images heavily colored by author and teacher
C.S. Lewis. In fact, LewisÆ classic novel The Great Divorce, served as an
influence on several of the discÆs songs, while his sense of imagination and
heart deeply shaped the melodic and stylistic inspiration behind the band in
general.

Lott enthusiastically admits to the overarching influence the Cambridge Master
had on the band and on this album. ôTwo of the songs are specifically based on
The Great Divorce,ö he explains. ôThey describe the main character in this
classic and the choice he is faced with to stay in hell or go to heaven.ö The
driving rocker ôEndless Dayö directly quotes the book with the line ôa thin line
of emerald green stretched tight as a fiddle-string.ö Lott continues, ôItÆs
about heaven being this amazing wide open place,ö Lott shares. ôBut the song
æPart OneÆ puts off a dismal, confused feeling representing his option to stay
in hell.ö

LewisÆ words were also specifically influential on the discÆs opening cut
ôMadmen,ö but his sense of imagination and scope even influenced the
arrangements, melodies and overall style of the disc. Stovall is also their
resident Lewis aficionado. ôI drew a lot of inspiration from my emotional
response to his books,ö he explains. ôAs a result, we found this rock /
alternative sound with a sense of mystery and deep meaning.ö

ôPraise and Adore,ö the soaring and instantly memorable lead single is not a
worship song in the classic understanding of the term. ôWhen I sat down to write
it,ö Stovall recalls, ôI had no agenda. I wasnÆt trying to write a song with the
meaning it has. I was really just trying to write a song from my heart to God.
From the title æPraise and AdoreÆ and the way itÆs structured, it sounds like a
praise song; however, the main point is not about praising God. ItÆs about how
people can go their whole lives without ever knowing true life and having an
abundance of it.ö Lott continues, "It was originally titled 'Some Live Without
it,'" he adds. ôSometimes we don't realize that a lot of people exist outside of
that bubble in a real world of hurt and despair. We should be thankful and
praise God that we have the opportunity to live our lives with the hope that He
has given us and strive to help others see that hope."

Whether referring to the cascading melodies, the complex musicality, the
artfully beautiful lyrics or the thematic orchestration, Wavorly is a richly
layered musical experience that has both immediate ôWowö factor and long-term
staying power. But as rich as the bandÆs creative vision is, their heart is
buried deep into the belief that music can have a positive and life-changing
effect on peopleÆs lives in ways that really matter.

Recorded in the late spring and summer of 1969 and released in October
of that year, To Our [CENSORED]ren's [CENSORED]ren's [CENSORED]ren marked the first
release from the Moody Blues' own Threshold Records label -
- essentially a finished work right down to the jacket design as
delivered to Decca/London Records, without any of the fighting and
negotiation that had been required to get their prior albums issued in
the desired form. Mostly written and conceived on a long rest after
extensive touring behind their prior album, the record showed the band
pulling effectively in several directions at once, generating rich,
powerful electronic/psychedelic pieces such as "Beyond" and "Higher
and Higher," driving rock & roll -- John Lodge's bass was rapidly
becoming their anchor and their most formidable rock instrument -- and
lush, trippy psychedelic ballads ("Out and In," "Watching and
Waiting"), plus one catchy, hook-laden psychedelic pop number
("Gypsy"), all of it somehow held together across two sides, the hard
rock and the trippy sensibilities, the idealism and the hedonism all
balanced in a kind of perfect harmony that gave the album something
for almost every rock listener above the age of 13 to enjoy. Although
there was never a hit single off of the album, it still reached number
two in England and number 14 in America, demonstrating that the group
was in a position to hold onto the audience it had developed over its
previous three albums and even expand it slightly as a pure LP
listenership, without the benefit of AM radio play to reach the most
casual listeners. It took longer to get certified gold than their
preceding or succeeding albums, but its sales were won via retail, one
LP listener at a time (with a tiny boost from the relatively new field
of FM radio), rather than wholesale from AM play of some catchy single
or other, and that showed how big the group's actual fan base had
become in just two years. Their next tour of the United States would
find them booked into a festival alongside the likes of the Rolling
Stones, Janis Joplin, Ten Years After, and the Band, all then among
the elite of the rock world. Although To Our [CENSORED]ren's [CENSORED]ren's
[CENSORED]ren was remastered quite nicely in 1997 as part of the "Moody
Blues Remasters" series, the 2006-released Deluxe Edition of To Our
[CENSORED]ren's [CENSORED]ren's [CENSORED]ren features the cleanest mix and mastering
of the album ever heard. The first disc offers a dual-layer SACD/CD
edition of the album, on which every one of the dozens of guitar parts
and massed vocal parts can be heard in sharp relief, without any
compromise in the total listening experience of each song. At the same
time, hearing the album in this way, one goes get a close-up look at
the corner into which the group had painted itself by relying on the
recording studio's capabilities for overdubbing -- numbers like
"Watching and Waiting" or "Eternity Road," with their subtleties
revealed right down to the six or more guitars in evidence on the
latter, come across as pure studio creations that would have been
(and, indeed, were) impossible to re-create on-stage. Even "Watching
and Waiting," the group's chosen single off of the album, proved
impossible to do in concert, and only "Gypsy" ever found a place in
their repertory (though in concerts from 2005, using technology
available 30-some years later and an augmented lineup, it was possible
for them to do "Higher and Higher" on-stage). The second disc, which
runs even longer than the original album, opens with the original,
unfaded master of "Gypsy," which is not only a generation up on any
prior version of the song but offers it complete, without the cross
fades needed for its inclusion on the album. "Candle of Life" and "Sun
Is Still Shining" are also here. The main body of the CD, however, is
given over to eight songs performed live by the group for the BBC's
David Symonds Show on December 17, 1969. This is just about worth the
price of admission by itself, as a live-in-the-studio re-creation
(complete with invited audience) of much of their concert set from
this period, which was also captured live at Royal Albert Hall during
the same period and later issued as part of Caught Live + 5; it isn't
too different from the Albert Hall performance except that the
fidelity is superior and the sound much closer and more intimate, and
the vocals by Mike Pinder, Justin Hayward, and others are generally
more expressive. Ironically, because "Gypsy" was the only song off the
album at hand to make it into their concert set, everything else on
the program is from their three prior LPs; this includes a beautifully
sung rendition of "Never Comes the Day" and the complete "Threshold of
a Dream" suite, plus "Nights in White Satin" and "Legend of a Mind."
Despite some overloads and tape distortion (especially on Ray Thomas'
flute and parts of the suite, and Pinder's Mellotron solos), it's all
worth hearing and worth the extra investment. The extensive annotation
is also well written and researched, and the original Peter Travers
jacket design has been restored and enhanced, with lyrics included
along with the annotation.
