The latest project from the Minneapolis hip-hop collective Rhymesayers is, like
most of its indie rap, a smart and hard mix of punk and hip-hop. "First of all,
fuck Bush," P.O.S. shouts over the metallic-tasting fusion of Tom Morello and
industrial noise. On this impressive sophomore outing, P.O.S. sticks to the
Eminem style of off-kilter beat riding, and he and his producers scatter goth
effects all over the place. Guest turns come from Rhymesayers all-star Slug,
Craig Finn of the Hold Steady (who contributes the line "The posters in the
lobby of the theater called it 'Predator' / I called it weak and unwatchable,
Carl Weathers and two future governors, it's really unacceptable") and Greg
Attonito of Bouncing Souls. P.O.S' lyrics can be too cool for school -- his
punkish rants are sharp like a razor, even if we have no idea what he's got
against Fresca -- but his soundscapes come off looming like the monster in the
hills.
